An evaluation of the synergy of satellite passive microwave observations between 1.4 and 36 GHz, for vegetation characterization over the Tropics

Satellite passive microwave observations from 1.4 to 36 GHz already showed sensitivity vegetation parameters, primarily through the calculations of Vegetation Optical Depth (VOD) at individual window frequencies, separately. Here we evaluate synergy this frequency range for characterization, estimation two its foliage and photosynthesis activity as described by Normalized Difference Index (NDVI), woody components carbon stock Above Ground Carbon (AGC), using different combinations channels in considered range. Neural network retrievals are trained on these parameters (NDVI AGC), several channel combinations, including future Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) that will observe simultaneously GHz, first time. This methodology avoids use any assumptions complex interaction between surface (vegetation soil) radiation, well ancillary observations, propose a genuine objective evaluation information content frequencies characterization. Our analysis quantifies shows expected potential CIMR instrument monitoring tropical environments, compared current instruments.
